The Church of the Misericordia

“Hexagon” tile (among the winners of Adi Ceramics Design Award @ Cersaie 2014), tridimensional with “glazed cotto” effect, developed with Tagina for the covering of the Confraternity of Mercy Church of Terranuova Bracciolini (Arezzo). Designed by the studio Archea Associates, the religious complex of the Confraternity of Mercy church at Terranuova Bracciolini, in the province of Arezzo, covers an area of 1.910 square meters. The church is composed on two levels on ground and one level underground. The project finds its uniqueness in the external covering, true particularity of the whole building: to enhance the relation between the external light and the architecture, MarcoCasamonti, charter member of Archea Associates, has conceived personally Esagona, a tridimensional tile with a hexagonal shape, then tailor-made by the research and development laboratory of Tagina, able to give life to projects and customized ceramic products. The tridimensional covering of the church of Arezzo is made through the employment nearly “kaleidoscopic” of such hexagonal tiles in glazed porcelain; the tiles cover the wall portions in different ways: in some areas simply flat, while in other areas become little prismatic volumes in relief. The surface of Esagona, studied by the team Archea together with Tagina, has a pleasant optical effect, thanks to the glazing of the ceramic material able to interact with the light and transforms the ventilated shell of the building in a precious and iridescent surface. In occasion of the lecture Ceramics and the Project, organized the last 1st July by Italian Ceramic Manufacturers Association and Cersaie in cooperation with the Order of Architects of Naples, was held the prize giving of the contest Ceramics and the Project 2015 that has elected the Studio Archea Associates winner of the first prize in the institutional category with the project Confraternity of Mercy Church of Terranuova Bracciolini.
